AL - BALKHI Award 2019
Safiyyah Sultana founder of Sakinah Counselling was awarded the Al-Balkhi award for outstanding work in the workplace 2019. This award was very special as it was solely nominated by the general public.
I founded Sakinah which means inner peace, to help individuals reach their potential. A basic human need is to be loved and accepted. Certain issues are not conscious to us and this is where I come in with counselling experience since 2003, to help you explore your issues using the latest findings in Neuroscience and Psychology.
I have developed various other services due to the needs of our clients. Single Mothers group, Childrens Club, Sakinah Community group, etc. All to incorporate a holistic need of a community.
I have learned a very important lesson during my counselling years that even though I was meant to help my clients, they have helped me become a better person. It's their commitment and strength to endure life difficulties, that has impacted me deeply. I feel honoured to be part of their Journey.
" I didn't think I needed counselling, it was my wife who needed it. However I soon discovered that having a better understanding of myself was not only an eye opener for me but saved my marriage. Thank you so much Safiyyah! " A. J.
" I never thought that my past was linked to my present but exploring my history has helped me understand why I snap and then fall into deep depression. Once I understood, my counsellor and I worked on how we can change the old patterns." M.S.
" I was hesitant to seek counselling particularly as majority of the services didn't understand where I was coming from. I spent most of the time explaining what certain issues meant in my culture. Therefore it was refreshing to have a Counsellor who understood my background and we could just proceed to explore my issues." N. H.
"Phone counselling was extremely convenient. As a man I felt Safiyyah completely understood me and helped me through a very difficult divorce. I have nothing but praise for this lady.. thank you Safiyyah" SA
Sakinah Counselling has been established since 2003 and it enables us to offer effective psychological care. We work with a number of mental health issues and include education and support to the community.
We specialise in Islamic Counselling, however we welcome everyone regardless of their background because finding Sakinah (inner peace) is a universal human need.
Our focus is to help individuals heal, energize, and become aware of their inner strengths. We achieve this by providing a neutral safe space, listening to your concerns and customizing a treatment plan.
We combine our knowledge of psychology, basics of neuroscience, culture and religion. This provides a holistic approach to your needs.
We promise to be there for you every step of your journey. Our goal is to help you grow from your struggles, heal from your pain and move forward to where you want to be in your life.
Prophet Mohammad said:
“The best amongst you are the best in character and manners.”
Al-Bukhari
Depression, fear, and anxiety are some of the most common and uncomfortable emotions that we can experience at some point in our lives. Through counseling, we are able to help you with motivation, perspective and joy that you would like to have in your life.
Many individuals can experience symptoms associated with painful and traumatic circumstances. Anxiety, fear, and hopelessness are a few emotions that can linger post traumatic events. We can help you overcome these symptoms and guide you through the process of grief and healing.
Relationship/marriage counseling can be beneficial to couples who are looking to strengthen their emotional connection, in all stages of their relationship. Through islamic counselling sessions, both couples are held in a supportive place to discuss issues and solutions to better strengthen your relationship.
Minimum 3 sessions booking in advance
I recommend that both parties first have individual sessions and then joint sessions. This helps me understand you individually and understand the dynamics of your relationship.

It’s about how your brain works in regards to your emotions and moods and how you can control it. We often blame ourselves for the way we are but there is more to it because most of our behaviour is biological. By understanding it is the first step in changing it.
What will I learn?
OUR LAST WORKSHOP WAS SOLD OUT, INFACT WE WERE OVER BOOKED!
In the new field of neurocardiology, scientists have discovered that the heart possesses its own intrinsic nervous system, a network of nerves so functionally sophisticated as to earn the description of a “heart brain.” Containing over 40,000 neurons, this “little brain” gives the heart the ability to independently sense, process information, make decisions, and even to demonstrate a type of learning and memory. In essence, it appears that the heart is truly an intelligent system.
The Prophet salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said about your heart: Truly in the body there is a morsel of flesh which, if it be sound, all the body is sound and which, if it be diseased, all of it is diseased. Truly it is the heart. [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]
"I believe it is our duty as parents to educate and nurture our children's hearts."
Safiyyah Sultana
I am the mother of 3 beautiful children. No doubt this is the the best part of my life!
I am a Neuopsychotherapist and founded Sakinah Counselling in 2003. This was due to a lack of mental health services specialising in cultural and religious understanding. It has been a long journey to break the taboo and we have certainly come a long way.
To bring awareness to mental health issues, I have created and presented 2 shows on Islam Channel and have appeared on Channel 4 and Sky News as an expert.
I have continued my studies and training in various areas like breavement, drug abuse, domestic violence, child psychology, etc.
After years of counselling I have gained an understanding that most adult issues stem from early childhood experiences. Therefore I feel that an early intervention in childhood can prevent issues in adulthood. SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) can be a powerful tool to a healthy brain development.
I have a masters degree in Psychology and Neuroscience at Kings College London.
